c. 1855. Four miniature volumes, with 8 hand coloured wood engravings on inserted leaves, of fables by Fenelon . The four volumes are bound in decorative silk, each with a different pattern, and adorned with a different paper embossed decoration (a sheep and lambs, a rose, Forget-me-nots and a Monkey) and all are presented in a small original decorative box. The contents are as follows: Volume 1 (29 pp): with 2 full page colour platess; Story of Flora, The Ape and The Two Mice. Volume 2 (30 pp): with 2 full page colour plates; Alibee, The Young Princess and The Bee and the Fly. Volume 3 (29 pp): with 1 full page colour plate; A Journey to Fairyland and The Story of an Old Queen and a Young Peasant. The Bodleian Library contains copies of two of the volumes and dates them between 1850-60 - my copies hand dated to 1858.The tales are based upon the fables written by Fenelon (full name François de Salignac de la Mothe-Fénelon, 1651 - 1715), a famous French Bishop and author, for the young future King of France, who was under his tutorage. Specific Condition: Box: The laid paper to the box is quite rubbed and the added paper decoration is only partly present. The box is however whole. Binding: The silk bindings of the individual volumes have been well protected by the box and they are quite bright with only slight grubbiness. Interior: Each volume contains a personal Christmas dedication to the same person from 1858. Occasional brown spots and grubbiness but basically all are complete and in very good condition. 48mo - over 3" - 4" tall.
