Interesting children's story, apparently true and which has been based on old diaries and documented tales. The Bethlehem of the title refers to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania - a place where Moravian children were sent at Christmas time, apparently as protection from the Indians. Katherine Milhous was to win the Caldecott Medal a few years later [1951] for The Egg Tree and this book very much set out her style and her folklore approach of that later book. There are three double page colour illustrations at the start of each chapter and black and white illustrations throughout. The end papers are illustrated in white on a dark forest green background. Buff cloth covered boards with a forest green decoration to upper board and titling to backstrip. DJ is not price clipped. There is mild rubbing to the folded edges of the dustjacket and a small chip to the upper spine area. Small 1.5 cm. closed tear to one page edge that has a remaining old sellotape stain to it.
