The Wonder Book of Animals for Boys and Girls
2 The Wonder Book of Animals for Boys and Girls
London and Melbourne Ward, Lock and Co. Limited [1939] Hardcover Good + fair Jacket Ernest Aris, Dorothy Bishop et al
With 8 colour plates and nearly 300 other illustrations this is a nicely presented volume. The animals covered range from dogs, birds, fish to wild animals. Some of the illustrations come from photos and in addition there are drawings by Ernest Aris, Dorothy Bishop and Frank M. Williamson. Ward Lock published Wonder Books from 1905 right through until the 1960's. There were general picture annuals as well as specialist volumes such as this one. They are generally characterised by the profuse illustrations contained within and the gold rear board. This volume has end paper illustrations by Thomas Maybank (1869-1929). Maybank illustrated many of the books in the ‘wonder-book’ series and is perhaps best known as an illustrator for the humorous and satirical magazine Punch. This still has the rather hard to find dustjacket. 256pp. 25x19 cm. Pictorial paper covered boards over red cloth backstrip. Dustjacket has various chips and some loss to spine and front corner. Edges worn. Backstrip bumped and stain to lower part. Some browning to endpapers.

The Story of Little Black Sambo, Bannerman, Helen
7 Bannerman, Helen The Story of Little Black Sambo
London Grant Richards 1900 Fourth edition Hardcover Very Good Helen Bannerman

Tom Thumb and other Old-time Fairy Tales Once Upon a Time Series, Bates, Katharine Lee - edited by / Illustrated by Margaret Evans Price
9 Bates, Katharine Lee - edited by / Illustrated by Margaret Evans Price Tom Thumb and other Old-time Fairy Tales Once Upon a Time Series
Chicago / New York Rand McNally & Company 1931 Second edition Hardcover Very Good Margaret Evans Price
A large format children's book with 3 colour full page illustrations and 26 quarter / half page colour illustrations presented with five classic fairy tales -Tom Thumb, The Goose Girl, Blue Beard, Jack and the Beanstalk and Puss in Boots. Margaret Evans Price was an accomplished illustrator but she did not leave a great body of work - possibly because she was diverted into her other business interest of founding Fisher-Price toys with her husband. As eventually the art director at Fisher-Price she allegedly designed many of the toys after the illustrations in her earlier children's' books. Paper covered boards with a striking black and white background pattern with a large colour illustration on the upper board and a fairy silhouette on the lower board. 31x25 cm. Unpaginated - 34 pp. Corners worn; top/tail backstrip crushed with a little loss of covering paper. Faint remnants of a scribble line on title page and short closed tear to edge. Contents clean and fresh.

The Pied Piper of Hamelin, Browning, Robert, illustrated by T. Butler-Stoney
14 Browning, Robert, illustrated by T. Butler-Stoney The Pied Piper of Hamelin
London Ernest Nister 1906 First edition thus Hardcover Good + T[homas] Butler-Stoney
Contains 12 full page chromolithograph illustrations - all very vibrant and strong colouring - and black / white wood-cut illustrations on all of the text pages. Possibly based on historical fact dating back to the 14th century [or even earlier], Browning wrote this extended poem of the Hamelin legend in 1842, after the Brothers Grimm had written their folk tale in 1816. There are many illustrated versions of Brownings poem, but this has to be one of the better ones with Butler-Stoney's wonderful characters with such expression. Unfortunately Butler-Stoney did not illustrate that many children's books and that is indeed a shame. Coloured pictorial boards over a red cloth backstrip. 210x270 mm. 26 pp. Nister number 1506. Very slight movement in binding. Altogether a very good copy with all illustrations in vibrant condition.

Caldecott's Picture Books Containing all 16 titles, Caldecott, Randolph
16 Caldecott, Randolph Caldecott's Picture Books Containing all 16 titles
London George Routledge & Sons 1878 First edition Hardcover Very Good Randolph Caldecott
This custom made pull-off case contains all 16 first editions of Caldecott's Picture Books. The card covered books are fully illustrated [printing by Edmund Evans] on each page with a combination of monochrome and colour. The pull-off case is leather quarterbound with gilt titling and decoration to the spine. All 16 titles are shown in gilt lettering on the spine. There is a small gilt monogram [HEG] to the 'upper board' of the case. The case measures 25x23x6 cm [10x9x2.4 inches] and all 16 books fit snugly inside. The books changed format and size slightly between the first and last eight from portrait [228x206 mm] to landscape [203x236 mm]. The Picture Books were published annually, in pairs, from 1878 until Caldecott's death in 1866 - always in time for Christmas they were the forerunners of the later Christmas Annuals [Randolph Caldecott Society]. The 16 titles are: John Gilpin [1878], The House that Jack Built [1878], The Babes in the Wood [1879], The Mad Dog [1879], The Three Jovial Huntsmen [1880], Sing a Song for Sixpence [1880], The Queen of Hearts [1881], The Farmer's Boy [1881], The Milkmaid [1882], Hey Diddle Diddle and Baby Bunting [[1882], A Frog he would a-Wooing Go [1883], The Fox Jumps Over the Parson's Gate [1883], Come Lasses and Lads [1884], Ride a Cock Horse to Banbury Cross and A Farmer Went Trotting [1884], Mrs. Mary Blaize [1885], The Great Panjandrum [1885]. These first edition versions are considered to be more collectible than the later editions published posthumously by Warne, not only because they are firsts, but due to the fact that the engravings in the Routledge books reproduce the subtlety of the colour of the original illustrations - the Warne editions are considered to be brighter and not as true to the artist's intentions. The case has a small stain, c.4x3 cm, on the inside edge [does not penetrate] with some wear to corners of case and slight rubbing to top/tail of spine. Three of the books have a name inscribed to the top of the front cover [presume by style to be original owner] and several of the books have an original bookseller lable [Barrett of Chichester] to the front cover. There is the occasional finger smudge to the books, with some wear to the spine / edges of the card covers, but overall the books are in very good condition.

Little People, an alphabet The Dumpy Books for Children, Crosland, T.W.H.; illustrated by Henry Mayer
19 Crosland, T.W.H.; illustrated by Henry Mayer Little People, an alphabet The Dumpy Books for Children
New York Frederick A. Stokes Company 1902 First American edition Hardcover Very Good Henry Mayer
A quite delightful and entertaining ABC book with 24 chromolithograph plates, one for every letter of the alphabet [except x and y], showing a character in national dress, e.g. A for Arab, B for Boer, C for Chinaboy. Opposite each illustration is a short related verse, often quite amusing. This is one of the Dumpy Books for Children series, of which there were about 7 titles - these are listed on one of the prelims. 14x9 cm. 95pp. Paper covered illustrated boards over red cloth backstrip. Corners / edges worn with surface abrasion to boards. Top/tail backstrip bumped with short split to top [c. 1cm]. Inscription from 1903 on ffep. Clean contents.

The Gremlins from the Walt Disney production, Dahl, Flight Lieutenant Roald
20 Dahl, Flight Lieutenant Roald The Gremlins from the Walt Disney production
Sydney Ayres & James Pty. Ltd. 1943 First edition thus Hardcover Good copy Jacket Walt Disney studios
First Australian edition. Illustrated throughout in colour and black and white. Illustrations come from the Walt Disney studios. Illustrated paper covered boards with yellow & red illustrated front and rear endpapers. 273x220mm. Corners / edges worn. Top/tail backstrip bumped with short split to top end. A few marks and scuffs with tiny paper loss to lower board. The gutter has been reinforced with tape on the first and last few pages. Personal inscription on first prelim. Dustjacket is facsimile copy. An amusing story about little creatures that set about sabotaging military aircraft during the second world war, thereby leading to the term 'gremlins' for any inexplicible faults in the aircraft. Dahl had been a pilot during WWII, hence the 'Flight Lieutenant Dahl' authorship and the subject of the book was no doubt close to his heart and somewhat tongue in cheek.
