The Beauties of the Bosphorus, Pardoe, Miss
10 Pardoe, Miss The Beauties of the Bosphorus
London George Virtue [1855] First edition Hardcover Very Good William H. Bartlett
With 88 [including title page and vignette and map] steel engravings within a marbled calf leather binding with gilt tooling this is a beautifully presented book. The accomplished engravings are varied, including scenery, buildings, people and activities as well as a map. Whilst Miss Pardoe's text may be somewhat dry by today's standards, Bartlett's [RA, 1809-1854] engravings stand the test of time and are wonderful. First published in 1838, this edition from [1855] has an appendix written to take account of scenary that had "gained notoriety in connection with" the ongoing Crimean War. There are an additional 8 steel engravings by Bartlett, the last ones he completed prior to his death in 1854. The high quality engravings take in a fountain at Galata, a cooling room in a Hammam, a public Khan and best of all a coffee kiosque! Small original bookbinder's stamp on ffep [R.R. Bellamy, Burton on Trent]. 172pp. 28x22 cm. Corners worn, edges rubbed and some scuffing to backstrip. Occasional brown spotting throughout.

Hartford, Conn. American Publishing Company 1867 First edition Hardcover Good Waud, Warren, White et al
A fascinating book that provides an insight into America as it was between 1857 and 1867 as the western frontier was being explored. With over 200 engravings, including many plates and a two page map, that really bring the narrative to light. As introduced by the author: "I have sought to picture a fleeting phase of our national life; not omitting its grotesque, lawless features; not concealing my admiration for the adventurous pioneers who have founded great States from the Mississippi t the Pacific, and made a new geography for the American Union." 22.5x15.5 cm. 572 pp. This volume has been re-bound with the original red cloth covers and backstrip [with gilt lettering] having been re-laid over the new binding. Fisher's Illustrations of Constantinople and its Environs / Constantinople and the scenery of the seven churches of Asia Minor, Walsh, Rev. Robert; illustrations by Thomas Allom
13 Walsh, Rev. Robert; illustrations by Thomas Allom Fisher's Illustrations of Constantinople and its Environs / Constantinople and the scenery of the seven churches of Asia Minor
London and Paris Fisher, Son & Co. [1839] First edition Hardcover Good Thomas Allom
Fisher's illustrated Constantinople is a prime example of illustrated travel books of this era. This , the first series, has 48 tissue guarded steel engraved plates, including the frontispiece, vignette title and map of Constantinople - collated and complete. NOTE - the contents only calls up 47 plates, but this volume seems to have an additional one [Ancient archway and cavern of the Balkan mountains] that is not referenced. Maroon leather binding with a very fancy blind embossed pattern to both boards and the backstrip. This book has been rebound in leather with the original leather overlaid. The only loss to the original leather is at the top / tail of the backstrip and along the backstrip edges. Corners / edges worn. Replacement endpapers. Some brown spotting throughout, more prominant towards beginning and end of book. aeg. 28x23 cm. Allom was an architect and topographical illustrator and founder member of RIBA. Known for his meticulous work this, together with his architecural origins, are quite apparent in this work. [Houfe] The engravings herein are truly atmospheric and accomplished, taking in the 'humdrum' of every day life, such as in the village of Babec, to the majesty of some of the building interiors such as the Mosque in Santa Sophia to the truly impressive views such as Constantinople seen from the Golden Horn. It is truly fascinating.
