Meggendorfer, Lothar Always Jolly! London H. Grevel & Co. 1891 First Edition Decorative Cloth Good Lothar Meggendorfer nd [1891] - Montanaro. Typing error on first page: 'Introdution'. Contains eight complex movable pictures: The Angler, The Naturalist, The Forgotten Latchkey, The Lion, The Elephant, The Portrait Painter, The Musician and The Pianist. All of the illustrations are hand coloured and the movable elements are hinged using flattened wire coils. These coil rivots enable rotational and lifting actions, some scenes in this title comprising four different movements. Meggendorfer is respected as the 'king' of the movable book and an essential addition to a pop-up / movable collection. This book was only ever published in English by Grevel. Featured in Haining as the example of Meggendorfer. It is sometimes confused with the German title 'Immer Lustig', as Always Jolly is a literal translation of this. However of the eight movables in each of these books only one, The Angler, is common. Similarly, this book has the same cover as the german, 'Lebende Bilder', but again there is only one common movable, in this case The Pianist. This is normal with Meggendorfer books where those titles published in non German languages were composites of several of the German titles, ref. Krahe. Inscription, from 1897, on title page. This copy has been re-bound with replacement end papers and with a facsimile of the original cover pasted to the upper board. There are grubby marks to the page edges and several small closed tears. The movable elements have been restored where necessary with some replacement rivots and some facsimile replacement movable parts together with some replacement tabs. All are now in working order, although movement must be done with care. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Price:

Meggendorfer, Lothar Auf dem Lande München Braun & Schneider 1885 Hardcover Fair Lothar Meggendorfer Achte auflage. A rare Meggendorfer panorama presented on leporello folds, with 10 panels [possibly the last two panels are missing]. The continuous scene that runs across the panels starts with families arriving on trains to pick berries in a forest. The scene then moves on to the animals in the forest and then the farmers working their fields at the edge of the forest. Then it goes on to show the children working at the farm, gathering kindle wood, and then on to the farm animals and to the river bank where the children are fishing and playing with their toy boats. With a large riverboat in the background [that says Bavaria on its side] there are the fishermen in the deeper waters of the river. The scene progresses to the other side of the river where there is more fishing and basket traps for fish and lots of ducks leading up to the shore where there is another farmyard. There is a verse, in German, running along underneath all 10 panels. The book was printed by Meisenbach, most likely using his newly invented halftone process. On inspection I believe that the main images were printed from screened halftone blocks and the colour added with several line blocks - giving a hand coloured look. One of the cloth backstrips between two panels has been replaced. There is some chipping to the upper board edges along the backstrip. Some of the joins are loose but all are intact and the panorama can be quite safely fully opened to be viewed in its full glory of over 3 metres! As mentioned above, I think that there should be 12 panels. Each panel: 19x31 cm. Price:

Meggendorfer, Lothar Das Puppenhaus reproduction antique pop-up book Esslingen J. F. Schreiber 1978 Hardcover Fine Lothar Meggendorfer This reproduction of one of Lothar Meggendorfer's books unfolds to present a 1.4 metre long panoramam presenting a series of rooms and outside scenes from a Victorian era home. Each scene has pop-up and movable elements complete with figures and even pets. This has also been printed in English with the title The Doll's House. Interestingly in Peter Haining's reference on Pop-up books he cites a French title of this book - Maison de Poupée - and does not attribute Meggendorfer. This reproduction is of the second edition of the original, the differences between the first and second being in the first scene where the mule and cart have been replaced by an antique car [presumably a Mercedes....] and in the kitchen scene where the little girl has changed from sitting on the chair stirring a pot with her legs outstretched to a little girl sat with a coffee grinder and her ankles demurely crossed. 21x26 cm. Fine condition with all moving elements and pop-ups complete and working. Price:
