Lear, Edward The Jumblies and Other Nonsense Verses

Inscription on ffep 1922; this edition (the first with drawings by Brooke) first published in 1900. Contains 6 chromolithographic plates (including frontispiece), nicely coloured illustrated title page and charming wood cuts on the majority of other pages. Verses include: The Owl and the Pussy Cat, The Dong with the Luminous Nose and The Cummerbund. Unpaginated, c. 78 pages. This was a new edition of Lear's Nonsense Songs, which had been originally issued with very few illustrations. At this version it was intended to complement Lear's Pelican Chorus, which had been published earlier in the year, also with Brooke's illustrations. This particular issue has the original grey blue coloured boards with white lettering and white backstrip with blue lettering, and the yellow / orange decorated front and rear end papers. Specific condition: Cover: Corners worn, small split to ffep, text block becoming a little loose. Interior: Grubby edges to 3 plates and old sellotape staining to the rear of two of the plates. Some grubby marks and remains of erased pencil marks to one page. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
