Contains 10 monochrome plates plus decorative chapter head pieces and smaller illustrations by D. A. Shmarinvo who was a Stalin Prize winner and the illustrator for Tolstoy's War and Peace. The novel, originally published in 1831, was at the time considered a turning point in Russian literature as for the first time it represented the life of a common man and was written in a much more simple and narrative style than contemporary writings. Blue cloth binding with grey, black and gilt decoration and titling to upper board and backstrip. 111pp. 205x148mm. Slight surface rubbing and small chips to corners of dustjacket. Book - corners slightly bumped.
