310 Soulby, W. H. The Hoax Art Album ... containing over one hundred amusing and interesting picture puns
London & Manchester Cartwright & Rattray [1897] First edition Hardcover Good W. H. Soulby Signed
This extremely interesting book would have been the centre of attention for Victorian parlour games, long before TV and even radio was there for entertainment. At the top of each of the 22 pages of puzzles there is a cryptic title for you to decipher - some a bit cheeky and some quite difficult. Below the title there are 4-6 flaps, each with a clue, and you lift the flap for a picture [coloured wood engraving] that illustrates the answer. Some quite naughty, some obscure and some just down right witty and funny. If all else fails and you can't work out the answer there is a flap in the centre of the page under which are the answers to all of the riddles on the page. There is also one page with the 'Young Ladies Alphabet' and another with a rhyme called 'Ten Points in a Good Wife'. This copy has been signed by the author on a prelim page. All together a witty and cleverly composed book that is quite a rarity and a splendid glimpse into a completely different world. 31.5 x 27 cm. Dark blue cloth binding with blind embossed titling. Coloured engravings with gilt ornamentation to all pages.. Re-bound with the original cloth overlaid. Replacement end papers. Remants of a damp stain to both boards. Generally clean contents with a little damp along the lower edge of pages - this does not go past the outer gilt border of the pages.

London, Paris, Melbourne Cassell & Company Limited 1890 Hardcover Good
Fifth Thousand. A collection of engravings by Dorothy Tennant that previously appeared in several other publications, all of what she refers to as 'ragamuffins' - the children who lived in the streets of 19th century London. They are very appealing, and that is her intention as she set out in her introduction - she is attempting to show an alternative side to their normal presentation in the media of the day. There are 40 illustrations, all presented as plates. Frontispiece is an engraving with tissue guard of Dorothy Tennant. An interesting book showing an even more interesting aspect of Victorian life in England. aeg. 25x19 cm. Beige cloth with wide green backstrip. 314 Sterne, Laurence / illustrated by Norah McGuinness A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy
London Macmillan & Co. Ltd. 1926 First edition thus Hardcover Very Good Norah McGuinness
First published in 1768, just a few weeks before the Irish author Sterne died, this book recounts the amorous adventures of the narrator, Reverend Yorick. This is the first edition of the version with the Norah McGuinness illustrations, of which there are six plates, a colour frontispiece and well over 100 smaller illustrations presented throughout the text. McGuinness, who was also Irish, presents some highly stylised and appropriate illustrations to support the somewhat risque text - to me they are vaguely reminiscent of ancient egyptian art with an art deco influence. This book also provides an early example of censorship with the very last word in the book having been removed, although it can be guessed at through context. Grey paper boards with black and blue/green illustration / text over grey cloth backstrip. Backstrip label with title and vignette. Vignette to lower board. 21x16 cm. vii & 241 pp. Top/tail backstrip bumped and worn. Backstrip label worn at one corner. Personal inscription ffep. Clean and tight contents.

334 Upton, Bertha The Adventures of Two Dutch Dolls and a 'Golliwogg'
London Longmans, Green & Co. 1923 Hardcover Very Good Florence K. Upton
Contains 31 full page colour illustrations as well as little vignettes within the sepia script text pages. This is the first of 13 golliwogg books written and illustrated by the mother and daughter Upton pair. In this first book in the series the golliwogg was not intended as the 'star' of the show and he was really just a supporting character to the Dutch peg dolls, appearing in just over a third of the illustrations. However he proved so popular at the time that he became the central character in the subsequent books. In all of the Upton books the Golliwogg is presented as friendly and kind, unlike in later imitations [such as Blyton] where he could be portrayed as a bit of a scallywag. This is a charming story of peg Dutch dolls in a toy shop that come to life at midnight. With no clothes they make themselves a dress out of the American flag [Florence spent the first 14 years of her life in the U.S.] and the book narrates their nightime escapades with the other toys. When the Golliwogg first appears they are momentarily frightened but then they soon become best of friends and end up saving his 'life'. Illustration of the sun [who features in the last scene of the story] on the lower board. Golliwogg and two peg dolls dressed in flag dresses on upper board. Stiff card boards with tan backstrip. Oblong format; 28x21 cm. 64 pp [however as page numbers 23/4 and 55/6 have been used twice there are really 68 pages! Note - these double page numbers are not an indication of a first edition as sometimes claimed]. Two corners chipped. Slight marking to boards. Personal dedication on ffep. Occasional short closed tear but basically clean complete contents.

335 Upton, Bertha; Illustrated By Florence K. Upton The Golliwogg's Air-Ship
London Longmans, Green & Co. 1902 First Edition Hardcover Very Good Upton, Florence K.
29 full page and one double page spread full colour illustrations plus smaller sepia illustrations on the other text pages. Story line follows Golliwogg and Sarah Jane, Peg, Meg and Midget as they build an airship, decide what clothes they should wear to fly in it and then take a rather calamitous journey. Wonderful example from the Golliwog series of books. Written by mother Bertha and illustrated by daughter Florence (1873-1922) who was born in the U.S. and worked in the U.K. There were 12 Golliwogg books written between 1896 - 1909, this is the 6th of those books. The word Golliwogg, which is no longer considered a socially acceptable word, originated from these books and is listed in the dictionary. Upton illustrated other children's books (see the Vege-men's Revenge for example) and was an accomplished artist, exhibiting at the Royal Academy, London. Condition: Binding: Corners worn, edges rubbed in parts. 3 small (1mm) holes in backstrip. The first quire is a bit loose but the overall binding is intact, as are the endpapers. There was a strip of tape between the first quire and the free front end paper, this has been removed. Interior: Very bright and clean. N.B. The photo may appear as if the cover has a stripe running vertically across the cover of the book, this is due to the fact the book was too wide for me to scan as one image and the photo is a merging of two files. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

358 Walsh, Rev. Robert; illustrations by Thomas Allom Fisher's Illustrations of Constantinople and its Environs / Constantinople and the scenery of the seven churches of Asia Minor
London and Paris Fisher, Son & Co. [1839] First edition Hardcover Good Thomas Allom
Fisher's illustrated Constantinople is a prime example of illustrated travel books of this era. This , the first series, has 48 tissue guarded steel engraved plates, including the frontispiece, vignette title and map of Constantinople - collated and complete. NOTE - the contents only calls up 47 plates, but this volume seems to have an additional one [Ancient archway and cavern of the Balkan mountains] that is not referenced. Maroon leather binding with a very fancy blind embossed pattern to both boards and the backstrip. This book has been rebound in leather with the original leather overlaid. The only loss to the original leather is at the top / tail of the backstrip and along the backstrip edges. Corners / edges worn. Replacement endpapers. Some brown spotting throughout, more prominant towards beginning and end of book. aeg. 28x23 cm. Allom was an architect and topographical illustrator and founder member of RIBA. Known for his meticulous work this, together with his architecural origins, are quite apparent in this work. [Houfe] The engravings herein are truly atmospheric and accomplished, taking in the 'humdrum' of every day life, such as in the village of Babec, to the majesty of some of the building interiors such as the Mosque in Santa Sophia to the truly impressive views such as Constantinople seen from the Golden Horn. It is truly fascinating.

360 Weatherley, Frederick E. and Bingham, Clifton Pleasant Surprises for Chicks of All Sizes Nister Moveable
London / New York Ernest Nister / E. P. Dutton & Co. [1891] First edition Hardcover Good Lizzie Lawson, Harriet Mary Bennett, G. H. Thompson, J. Lawson, W. Foster et al.
Contains 8 pages of moveables - dissolving slats - in wonderful chromolithograph. The dissolving slats work like a venetian blind - you pull a tab at the bottom of the page and this causes the displayed illustration to disappear behind a second illustration, thus presenting a new scene. So, across the 8 pages of moveables there are actually 16 illustrations. Published in Germany, c. 1893, by Theo Stroefer as 'Heitere Stunden Ein Wandelbuch Mit Reimen von Eugen Reichenbach'. Although Nister started publishing children's books in 1877, he did not publish any moveables until 1890; this book is most likely the third moveable that was published by Nister. [Hunt] The accompanying stories are presented in 4/5 line stanzas and these text pages are illustrated with line drawings. 325x250 mm / unpaginated, 20pp. Blue and white floral end papers. Condition: Boards badly rubbed and stained with the backstrip frayed with a few little tears. Hinges cracked but still holding. One page has been reattached. Staining to corners of fixed end papers. All mechanisms have been restored and are fully working with replacement tabs. All of the chromolithographs are complete and in good condition. Most of the mounts around the tabs have close tears [repaired], presumably due to over enthusiastic operation in the past. As with most Nister books this has been printed on early wood pulp paper and it is now quite brittle and hence has edge chips in places.

363 Weatherly, Frederic Edward The Book Of Gnomes
London Ernest Nister 1895 First Edition Hardcover Fair Hardy, Evelyn Stuart
8 chromolithographic plates, 9 other full page sepia wood cut illustrations, and in text sepia illustration on all of the other pages. Oblong format (c. 12 inches x 10 inches; 30 cm. x 25 cm). Undated, approximate date provided by reference to V&A Museum library. The story line follows the preparation for a Ball, which is being held to keep the Elves out of mischief. The story follows the distribution of the invitations, the making of the clothes to be worn, the preparation of the land and the feast, the upset of those that are not invited, a stolen kiss between the Robin and the Wren - altogether a truly charming tale that is beautifully illustrated by the Nister chromolithographs. Illustrated end papers. Specific condition: Binding: Corners worn, outer boards are grubby and scuffed. Ffep missing but frontispiece intact.Personal inscription (1918) on front pastedown end paper. Interior: A few closed tears and grubbiness to page edges; on some of the pages there is quite a strong crease near to the hinge (due, I think to a combination of the heavy paper and the tightness of the binding) and where appropriate these have been reinforced with archival tape to prevent further damage. Not the best of copies, but all of the pages are present and the illustrations are nice and clear - a good opportunity to collect a lovely Nister at a reasonable price. N.B. Now protected in an archival film cover. N.B. The disjointed image is due to the photo being a composite view - the book is larger than my A4 scanner! 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

364 Weckerlin, J. B. Chansons de France pour les petits français
Paris E. Plon, Nourrit et Cie., [1884] Stamped Cloth Very Good M.B.de Monvel
This chromolithograph illustrated children's book has illustrations on every page supporting either a song or a verse in French language [24 songs in total]. The illustrations by M. B. de Monvel have a Kate Greenaway 'feel' to them, mainly from their colouring and subject matter, but they are more humourous and have, dare I say it, more character. They are a very nice example of their genre. 48 pp. 8vo [oblong] / 23x27 cm. Red cloth covered boards with a daisy flower pattern and larger gilt embossed flower. Wear to two corners, replacement end papers. Two short closed tears repaired with archival tape.

365 Weedon, L. L. The Land of Long Ago. A Visit to Fairyland with Humpty Dumpty
London Ernest Nister First Edition Hardcover Very Good Pen and Ink Illustrations By E. Stuart Hardy
1898 (dated from British Library). Contains 6 wonderful full page Victorian Chromolithographic pop-ups (Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Puss in Boots, There Was an Old Woman who lived in a shoe and Beauty and the Beast). In addition there are sepia line illustrations on all of the 21 pages of text. This book was printed in Bavaria, which was the centre of chromolithographic printing at this time and the quality of the chromolithographs belies this. All of the pop-ups are original and are in perfect working condition. Specific condition: Binding: The binding has been professionally re-strung and some of the page joins have been re-inforced with the original end papers, backstrip etc. all being retained. The corners are worn. Interior: Some of the pop up support tabs have been replaced and some of the figures have been re-inforced from behind. The corner of the floor to one of the scenes has been replaced and a tear to one of the text pages has been bonded (both done professionally). There is a crease to the edge of one of the scenes. There is a certain amount of soiling to some of the pages and the cover boards - this is commensurate with the age of the book. Overall this book is in very good condition. I have provided a scan of the cover (which is a composite of two parts, hence the apparent split down the image) but if you would like a view of one of the pop-ups please feel free to e-mail me as it really is the beautiful chromo pop ups that sell this book. Note: I have many other other pop-ups. Please browse my Pop-up / Panorama / Movable catalogue. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
