201 L.C. (Lucy Crane); Illustrated By Walter Crane The Baby's Bouquet
London Frederick Warne & Co. [1890] Hardcover Good + Walter Crane
There are 11 full page Walter Crane illustrations [incl frontis] and each of the remaining 56 pages is highly decorated in the Arts and Crafts style with Pre-Raphaelite and Japanese influences. The standard of decoration is much more sophisticated than other children's books of the time. The wood engraving was undertaken by Edmund Evans, who had a fruitful collaboration with Crane, and also with Kate Greenaway. This book is a companion to the Baby's Opera by Crane (please note that I also have a copy of this for sale). The text includes nursery songs from France, Germany, and England and was a tremendous success with several hundred thousand copies sold at the time. Tan cloth backstrip. Condition: corners worn; top/tail of backstrip bumped. Front and rear hinges are broken, but the binding itself is still relatively firm.

202 Lake, Minnie The Story of the First Christmas Morning - A Talking Book
London T. P. L. Production 1948 First Edition Decorative Cloth Very Good Mansbridge, John
17 colour plates related to the story of the nativity. No text - the idea of these talking record books is that you would play the record that told the story and then turn the page when prompted by the record. The Mansbridge illustrations are really very nice, quite stylised, with an interesting colour palette of rich colours. The hessian covering the lower board is lifting slightly and there is a small surface abrasion to the upper board. Slight brown spotting to title page. Record is present but broken. Please note that in the photo the edges of the book are not captured due to limitations in the size of my scanner. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.

204 Lancaster, Flo The Oojah Annual
London Peter Pitkin 1949 First Edition Hardcover Very Good Talintyre, H. M.
Front colour cover illustration of Uncle Oojah standing outside the Cinema Box Office with Jerry, Snooker and Binky. Contains a variety of short stories and cartoons, illustrated profusely with two colour wood cuts throughout. 100 pages. The Oojah stories started as a supplement to the Daily Sketch in the early 1920's and were developed into seperate publications, including the Annuals, which were published until the 1950's. This annual is undated, but I would say that it is from the late 1940's. Uncle Oojah is, of course the elephant from Oojah Land, and this volume also contains stories with his friend the black cat Snooker and other characters such as Jerry and Fuzzy Fox. Specific condition: Binding: Rubbing to corners, otherwise very good. 205 Leigh, Felix, Illustrated By Thomas Crane & Ellen Houghton London Town
London Marcus Ward & Co. 1883 First Edition Hardcover Very Good Crane, Thomas & Houghton, Ellen
Every page adorned with beautiful chromolithographic illustrations of Victorian life in London. The quality and nature of the Thomas Crane illustration are very much of their day, with similar colouring and impression to his contempories such as Walter Crane (his brother) and Kate Greenaway. There are some wonderful views of the Tower of London, Covent Garden, The British Museum and the Zoo - all captured at the end of the 19th century. You can see a good selection of the illustrations at the following web address http://www.fulltable.com/VTS/aoi/c/crhou/im/crh.htm which will reflect them better than my words could. This was written as a companion volume to Abroad, a copy of which I also have for sale, and At Home. London Town is however the more scarce volume. Specific condition: Binding: Corners worning and edges / top and bottom of backstrip rubbed. Lovely illustrated front and rear end papers are all intact. The quires have become a little loose as the strings have relaxed, but it is all fully intact. Internal: Some browning to a few page edges, otherwise very good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

227 Meggendorfer, Lothar The Doll's House reproduction antique pop-up book
London Kestrel Books / Intervisual 1979 Cardboard Covers Very Good Lothar Meggendorfer
This reproduction of one of Lothar Meggendorfer's books unfolds to present a 4 foot long panoramam presenting a series of rooms and outside scenes from a Victorian era home. Each scene has pop-up and movable elements complete with figures and even pets. Printed in German with the title Das Puppenhaus. Interestingly in Peter Haining's reference on Pop-up books he cites a French title of this book - Maison de Poupée - and does not attribute Meggendorfer. This reproduction is of the second edition of the original, the differences between the first and second being in the first scene where the mule and cart have been replaced by an antique car [presumably a Mercedes....] and in the kitchen scene where the little girl has changed from sitting on the chair stirring a pot with her legs outstretched to a little girl sat with a coffee grinder and her ankles demurely crossed. 21x26 cm. The corners and edges have slight wear. There are a few old mis-folds, now corrected, but all moving elements and pop-ups are complete and working.

229 Meggendorfer, Lothar Auf dem Lande
München Braun & Schneider 1885 Hardcover Fair Lothar Meggendorfer
Achte auflage. A rare Meggendorfer panorama presented on leporello folds, with 10 panels [possibly the last two panels are missing]. The continuous scene that runs across the panels starts with families arriving on trains to pick berries in a forest. The scene then moves on to the animals in the forest and then the farmers working their fields at the edge of the forest. Then it goes on to show the children working at the farm, gathering kindle wood, and then on to the farm animals and to the river bank where the children are fishing and playing with their toy boats. With a large riverboat in the background [that says Bavaria on its side] there are the fishermen in the deeper waters of the river. The scene progresses to the other side of the river where there is more fishing and basket traps for fish and lots of ducks leading up to the shore where there is another farmyard. There is a verse, in German, running along underneath all 10 panels. The book was printed by Meisenbach, most likely using his newly invented halftone process. On inspection I believe that the main images were printed from screened halftone blocks and the colour added with several line blocks - giving a hand coloured look. One of the cloth backstrips between two panels has been replaced. There is some chipping to the upper board edges along the backstrip. Some of the joins are loose but all are intact and the panorama can be quite safely fully opened to be viewed in its full glory of over 3 metres! As mentioned above, I think that there should be 12 panels. Each panel: 19x31 cm.

233 Milhous, Katherine Snow Over Bethlehem
New York Charles Scribner's Sons 1945 First edition Hardcover Very Good very good Jacket Katherine Milhous
Interesting children's story, apparently true and which has been based on old diaries and documented tales. The Bethlehem of the title refers to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania - a place where Moravian children were sent at Christmas time, apparently as protection from the Indians. Katherine Milhous was to win the Caldecott Medal a few years later [1951] for The Egg Tree and this book very much set out her style and her folklore approach of that later book. There are three double page colour illustrations at the start of each chapter and black and white illustrations throughout. The end papers are illustrated in white on a dark forest green background. Buff cloth covered boards with a forest green decoration to upper board and titling to backstrip. DJ is not price clipped. There is mild rubbing to the folded edges of the dustjacket and a small chip to the upper spine area. Small 1.5 cm. closed tear to one page edge that has a remaining old sellotape stain to it.

237 Mother Goose nursery rhyme The Old Man Who Lived in a Wood
London George Allen 1902 First edition Hardcover Good + T[homas] Butler-Stoney
Contains 10 full page coloured wood engraving illustrations with black and white wood engravings decorating all of the other pages. The colours are delicate and the artistry is humourous and engaging. Butler-Stoney did not illustrate more than a handful of book titles and that is regrettable as his work is very appealing. This is a reasonably hard to find title. The illustrations are set to the verse that is about a old man who challenges the work that his wife must do around the house believing that he can do in one day what she takes three days to do. A brave man indeed.... so they swap roles and I'm sure you can guess what happens. This rhyme is purported to come from an early 'Mother Goose' anthology and there is no author attributed in this book. Unpaginated, 32 pp. Personal inscription on ffep [1944]. Tan cloth backstrip with paper covered illustrated boards. 21 x 27 cm. Corners / edges worn; backstrip bumped. Front and rear hinges cracked; contents fresh and complete.

245 Norero, Andrée Alphabet des petits anges
Hardcover Very Good Andrée Norero
Charming ABC book with one page per letter with sweet illustrations of children and angels. One slightly odd illustration is for the letter 'D', which shows the Devil leading a small crying angel into fire. Other than the letter there is no text on the pages, other than on a few pages where the French text is embedded within the image, e.g. writing on the side of a train and on a poster. There is no publishing information and no dates, also though I would suggest is is probably 1950's. So, a bit of a mystery book but a lovely one! 13x14 cm. [28 pp.]

250 Ondrej Sekora Napipi the Chicken and His Friends / Kure Napipi a Jeho Pratele
Prague Josef Hokr Very Good O. Sekora
This Czech children's book was written and illustrated by Ondrej Sekora. It is a charming book, with 11 full page colour illustrations and black and white line illustrations on most of the 70 pages. The illustrations are all of children and animals, including: pigs, chickens, dogs, hedge hogs etc. The front cover (see photo) has a full size colour illustrated front board with yellow cloth backstrip and the front and rear end papers are also illustrated in full colour. For those not familiar with Sekora, he is very well known within the Czech Republic as an illustrator of children's books, particularly during the 1930s and 40s. As far as I am aware, his work has not been translated much outside of eastern Europe, which is a great shame as his illustrations are really wonderful and full of character. His work was commemorated on a Czech postage stamp in 1999. Condition: Binding: Original boards with very minor rubbing to edges and one worn corner to lower front. Clean with minimal marking for age. Interior: Handwritten inscription on Frontispiece, dated 1946,No browning, foxing or marks.

255 Pardoe, Miss The Beauties of the Bosphorus
London George Virtue [1855] First edition Hardcover Very Good William H. Bartlett
With 88 [including title page and vignette and map] steel engravings within a marbled calf leather binding with gilt tooling this is a beautifully presented book. The accomplished engravings are varied, including scenery, buildings, people and activities as well as a map. Whilst Miss Pardoe's text may be somewhat dry by today's standards, Bartlett's [RA, 1809-1854] engravings stand the test of time and are wonderful. First published in 1838, this edition from [1855] has an appendix written to take account of scenary that had "gained notoriety in connection with" the ongoing Crimean War. There are an additional 8 steel engravings by Bartlett, the last ones he completed prior to his death in 1854. The high quality engravings take in a fountain at Galata, a cooling room in a Hammam, a public Khan and best of all a coffee kiosque! Small original bookbinder's stamp on ffep [R.R. Bellamy, Burton on Trent]. 172pp. 28x22 cm. Corners worn, edges rubbed and some scuffing to backstrip. Occasional brown spotting throughout.

260 Paulsen, Martha; animations by Julian Wehr Toyland Movable
Akron Saalfield Publishing Company 1944 Hardcover Very Good Julian Wehr
Contains 4 movable colour illustrated pages by Julian Wehr. Wehr created around 40 movable children's books in the 1940's, based upon a patent from 1940 that he held. His illustrations are bright and colourful and very appealing. The movable elements are tab operated and which generally cause the movement of four or five aspects of the illustration. The animations are relatively simple and unlike other movables that are based upon rivets or coils [such as Meggendorfer's], Wehr's movements rely entirely on paper and as a result can be somewhat delicate. This book contains four short stories, each with a movable colour page. In each story the characters are animals and toys that have come to life. There's a rather scary story about a kitten asleep on the train track as the train approaches - real nightmare stuff! Royal blue paper covered hardback with red plastic spiral binding. 20x26 cm. [24 pp]. Corners rubbed. Top/tail of spine bumped. First page coming away from spiral binding. Replacement tab to last movable. All movables complete and work fine.

Hartford, Conn. American Publishing Company 1867 First edition Hardcover Good Waud, Warren, White et al
A fascinating book that provides an insight into America as it was between 1857 and 1867 as the western frontier was being explored. With over 200 engravings, including many plates and a two page map, that really bring the narrative to light. 293 Robertson, W. Graham Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh, and other pageants for a baby girl.
London John Lane The Bodley Head 1907 First edition Hardcover Very Good Walford Graham Robertson
The 12 coloured wood engraving plates make this a truly desirable and attractive volume. Robertson was part of the talented group of artists and illustrators who flourished in London in the 1890's and he claimed to have been influenced by Crane and the Glasgow school [Houfe] - something that is clearly evident in the illustrations in this work. The work is essentially a poem, written as a play for a young one year old child. Note - Robertson is perhaps best known for his illustration that was used for the frontispiece for the first edition of Graham's Wind in the Willows. Blue / purple cloth covered boards with illustration and titling in black and yellow to both boards and backstrip. 265x210mm. 152pp plus 8pp publisher's catalogue at rear. Fading to boards and backstrip. Corners, top/tail backstrip bumped. Small edge section of ffep and first prelim is creased with a small nib of paper loss.
