127 Ernest Nister My Own Farmyard Book The Picture Book Maker Series
London Ernest Nister 1908 First edition Hardcover Good + Helen Maguire, William Foster et al
A rare un-cut example of one of Nister's Picture Book Maker Series which contain model cut-outs of the illustrations for the reader to cut out and insert in the correct place within the book. There is a pocket at the front of the book which houses 8 sheets of chromolithograph illustrations [40 in all] and 4 sheets of black and white illustrations [19 in all]. Within the book there are several printed stories with blank numbered spaces for the illustrations. The theme of the stories / illustrations is animals / victorian children, all very typical Nister. Only one of the 59 illustrations has been cut out and this has not yet been mounted in the book, all of the other illustrations are un-cut, complete and intact. This book, or in fact any of the six titles in this series, is extremely rare in this complete and un-cut and un-mounted condition. Corners worn, edges rubbed, top/tail backstrip bumped. Boards a bit marked / grubby. The top edges of the front pocket holding the illustrations is torn. There is no loss of paper but I haven't repaired it as it actually makes it easier to remove the illustration sheets. Front hinge starting. Some grubbiness internally.

128 Ernest Nister - Movable Slats Peep Bo Pictures
London Ernest Nister 1898 First Edition Hardcover Fair G. H. Thompson, E. S. Hardy, W. Foster et al
Delightful and extremely rare movable book from Nister comprising of six transformation chromolithograph illustrations. The transformations are made up of horizontal slats operated by a tab that changes the illustration from one scene into another. So there is one scene of two cats having afternoon tea in a teashop and then they go on a boat trip at sea in a boat driven by a Puffin; a hen with her eggs just hatching and then taking her chickens out on the lake. As expected with Nister they are beautiful and sugar sweet! In Hunt, p.316. Not in Montanaro. 20x17.5 cm; 16pp.Scuffed boards with worn corners. This book suffers from the common problem with Nister books of having been published on wood pulp paper which is now very brittle, particularly around the edges. The book binder has re-set the pages and replaced the end papers [retaining the original front and rear free end papers] and reinforced some of the edges with archival tape, but the book is still fragile with chips / abrasions around the page edges / hinge lines - hence overall 'fair' condition. Some of the tabs have been replaced / repaired and all transformations work [to be operated with care!]. A very rare book with lovely illustrations! 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

141 Giraud, S. Lewis Bookano Zoo
London Strand Publications 1939 First Edition Hardcover Very Good
6 full colour double page pop-ups by Bookano (Giraffe, Elephant, Lions, Bison, Polar bears and Seal, Camel). The text provides informative descriptions of animals from around the world, interspersed with stories related to animals. The Bookano books brought the pop-up into vogue between the 1930's to the 50's. They were published in many formats: as a series of yearly annuals, an ABC book, a counting book, stories about Jesus, an adventure building book and a series of rhymes. I think that it had been intended that this zoo book would be the first of a series of books about zoo animals, but I believe this to be the first and only one published. This edition was however also issued by Bookano under another title: 'Animal Life in Fact, Fancy and Fun', a copy of which I also have for sale. Condition: Superficial wear to paper cover over backstrip, small square on cover where the top surface of paper has rubbed off (see photo), corners worn and edges rubbed. Binding nice and tight. Interior: All pop-ups fine and in good working order. Slight browning to page edges - a very common 'feature' in these Bookano books due to the type of paper / card stock that was used. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

What is particularly unusual about this particular copy is that it comes with the original box. This was to have been the first in a series of Andersen Bookano books, but to my knowledge no more were published. Specific condition: Binding: Minor rub to top / bottom edge of spine and bottom right corner (see photo). Personal inscription on front free end paper. 167 Hulme Beaman, Betty and S. G. The Disgraceful Business at Mrs. Goose's Larry the Lamb in Toytown - Book 3
London Oldbourne 1958 First edition Hardcover Very Good + very good Jacket not attributed
This is the third in the towntown series books that were attributed to father and daughter team S.G.Beaman and Betty Beaman. However as S.G. died in 1932 I suspect that this is more his daughter's work. Featuring Larry the Lamb, a children's character that had been much broadcast on the BBC, first radio and later television, since the late 1920's it is a typical children's tale from this time. Fully illustrated in colour on every page with the cartoon like characters that translated into quite crude puppets. 12mo/ 19.5x14.5 cm. Slight rubbing to corners and top/tail of backstrip. Previous owners name. Dust jacket price clipped with a few nicks to the corners. Overall in nice bright, clean condition - very good.

169 I. F. M. [possibly Mary Godolphin] - adapted by Swiss Family Robinson - in words of one syllable
New York McLoughlin Bros. [1889] Hardcover Good Chromolithographs unattributed
Contains 6 chromolithograph plates [artist unattributed], this is an abridged / rewritten version of Johann David Wyss's classic that has been reconstructed for younger readers only using words with one syllable. Several books of this type were published, i.e. rewritten in one syllable. When this title was published by Routledge in London, Mary Godolphin was cited as the author which makes me think that the author credited here, I.F.S., is Ms. Godolphin. Its an interesting series of books and this is nicely presented with the chromolithographs, if a little age weary. Tan cloth boards with gilt titling and black / red/ blue / white illustration to front. 245x200 mm. 112 pp. Condition: Corners worn; top / tail of backstrip bumped and worn through in a couple of places. Generally grubby / stained boards. Front and rear hinges cracked. The interior is clean and complete, although the paper is age browned with very minor spotting to about three pages.

182 Jonathan Swift, Illustrated By Harry G. Theaker Gulliver's Travels
London Ward, Lock and Co. Limited 1928 Hardcover Good Fair Jacket Harry G. Theaker
44 full colour plates by Harry G. Theaker, popular illustrator of children's books primarily during the 20's and 30's. There were several books published by Ward Lock in this series, others illustrated by Theaker (Grimm's Fairy Tales, The Water Babies etc.) and others illustrated by Margaret W. Tarrant and A. E. Jackson. As with these other volumes the plates make it a very special edition of this popular children's favourite. (see my catalogue for some of these other volumes). The photo shows the pictorial cover together with the dust jacket, both of which have different colour illustrations. 338 pages plus 6 of book adverts. Note: The cover and frontispiece state 48 illustrations, but the table of contents call up 44 and the book has been collated with 44 - this is correct as published. Specific condition: Dust Jacket: Unfortunately on the front cover and flap remain. They are creased and chipped, but there! Binding: The front board has benefitted from the jacket as it is wonderfully clean and crisp. The binding is tight and the unusual pictorial end papers are present. There is a damp stain on the rear board which has badly discoloured it and affected the rear end papers. Interior: Personal inscription on one of prelims. Contents clean and very good apart from staining caused from rear board. This does affect about the last 30 printed pages with some impact on about 20 more. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

New York Fill 'er Up Productions Inc. 2002 First Edition Hardcover As New Paper Engineering By Andrew Baron; Illustration By Peter D. Straus
Four double page and two single page pop-ups [with moveable elements] that have a humourous take on the menopause. An ideal present for women of a certain age. Full of references to hot flushes, memory loss and tears - but with that all important hope at the end of the tunnel. I particularly liked the carton of eggs in the bottom corner of the page that acts as a page counter - it starts off full and decreases page by page until its empty! 190 Krenn, Wilhelm / Mario Zampini Krenn's Theater Album No. 1 Aschenbrödel [Aschenbroedel / Cinderella] Carousel Pop-up / Peepshow
Leipzig Verlag Mediterranea 1943 Hardcover Good Mario Zampini / Raimondo Centurione
Unfolds from a flat book to present a 360 degree carousel with 6 different pop-up stages telling the story of Cinderella / Aschenbrödel. It was created by the Italian illustrator and stage designer Mario Zampini and the influence of his stage background is evident. Zampini was responsible for several of these carousel pop-up books which were published in German as Krenn's Theater Albums and in Italian as Libroteatro Hoepli. Titles in the series included Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Ali Baba [in German and / or Italian]. Also contained, in a flap on the inside front cover, is a booklet [in German] of the story. Illustrated paper covered boards over green cloth backstrip. 23x26 cm. Corners / edges worn, backstrip faded and bumped with short 2 cm. split. There is a personal name and address stamped 4 times on the lower board. Clasp to hold the carousel open is missing. There are several short tears to the front 'curtains' of the scenes, all of which have now been discretely repaired from behind with arichival tape. Scene 1: part of clothes line missing. Scene 6: part of top cross over of first section behind curtain is missing. There is some repair, from behind, to elements of scenes 4 and 6. Due to the complexity of the cut outs and illustration it is quite difficult to identify any missing pieces / damage but I have been able to do this by comparison with another copy.

Unfolds from a flat book to present a 360 degree carousel with 6 different pop-up stages telling the story of Sleeping Beauty / Dornröschen. Each stage has five levels of depth providing the peepshow effect. Illustrated paper covered boards over blue cloth backstrip. 23x26 cm. Corners / edges worn, backstrip faded. Clasp to hold the carousel open is part missing and therefore ineffective. The bottom of the blue stage border in the last scene has been replaced with plain blue paper. There should be a small loose pamphlet containing the story - this is missing. 198 Kubasta, Vojtech The Magic of the Circus pop-up
Leicester Brown Watson / Artia 1982 Hardcover Very Good Vojtech Kubasta
This title is from Kubasta's white series [weiße Reihe] of books which comprised ten titles, all characterised by the essentially white binding and picture of the yellow sun on the cover and that featured a dog and a white cat as the main characters. They were written for a younger audience and so the illustration tends to be more bold and simpler. The pop-up actions however are typical Kubasta, with most combining a pop-up and movable action in one and they are particularly inventive and interesting in this book. The pop-ups form several circus tricks and puzzles which are just a bit different. There is one corrected mis-fold and a crease, otherwise all the pop-ups and movable elements are complete and work correctly.

The linen backed hard cover has bevelled edges, the page edges are all gilt and the front and rear endpapers are nicely illustrated. This is one of the E.N. Illustrated Standard and Art Gift Books from Nister, which was a 'series of elegantly bound in cloth of good quality, printed on art paper.' [Hunt]. Condition: Binding: Very small tear to linen on front top corner and some of the illustration paint has rubbed off. The original owners name appears three times on the end papers / prelims. Interior: Two pages have dirty edges. Otherwise very good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
