Katherine Milhous had won the Caldecott Medal a few years earlier [1951] for The Egg Tree and this book very much follows in the style and tradition of that book. Where as The Egg Tree was a book for Easter, With Bells On is a Christmas story containing 14 full page colour illustrations in a muted limited colour palette in a naive / Pensylvanian style. Through the story some interesting Pensylvanian Dutch traditions are described, such as the Putz which actually is more likely to have originated in Germany. This is a nicely presented story with strong stylised art work with a good dust jacket that has also been signed by Katherine Milhous. Chips to dust jacket at top / bottom of spine with tiny holes along the front and rear dj flap folds making the rear fold very fragile - the cover is now retained in an archival cover. Very slight rubbing to top / tail of backstrip and corners of binding. Previous owner's name on ffep together with an illustration [pencil] of an angel that someone has tried to do in the style of Milhous.
