Marmaduke Multiply, Marmaduke (pseudonym)
201 Marmaduke (pseudonym) Marmaduke Multiply
London J. Harris First Edition Half-Leather Good
Dated 1816 and 1817 on the lower edge of several of the pages. There is an 1827 watermark on five of the pages, making this a subsequent impression of the first edition. There are 69 pages of hand coloured wood cuts, covering all the multiplications in the 12 times table, each with an associated rhyme designed as an aide memoire to the maths (Three times 9 are 27, My Babes and I are going to Devon). Published in 4 parts, this edition contains all four parts, three of them being identified as such. Marbled boards with Morrocco (?) spine with gilt tooling and title. This book was exported to the U.S. where it was published by Munroe and Francis, Boston, in 1839. That edition retained most of the text verses but replaced the illustrations. Condition: The boards and spine are quite worn and there are various ownership inscriptions and practice maths sums on the front and rear endpapers. Binding is firm and in good condition. Small corner missing from plate 37, not affecting picture or text. Bottom corner missing from plate 67 that takes away part of illustration and text. Grubbiness to some pages. 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall.

209 Meade, L.T. Beyond the Blue Mountains
London, Paris & Melbourne Cassell and Company Limited 1893 First edition Hardcover Very Good unattributed
A girls' adventure story by the Irish woman L. T. [Elizabeth Thomasina] Meade, a prolific author who published at least 280 books, primarily targeted at the girl literature market. This charming story of four siblings who embark on a journey to find their parents. The adventure presents them with a series of challenges where they must balance and judge concepts of good and evil. A tale of morals, often likened to Pilgrim's Progress. This first edition binding is very attractive - brown cloth with gilt and sky blue decoration with bevelled edges. Plain endpapers. Six [including frontispiece] full page illustration plates and very attractive head and tail pieces to each chapter. Unfortunately the illustrator is not attributed as they are really rather nice. vii plus 191 pp plus Cassell publication section at rear. 22x17 cm. Corners worn; top/tail bumped. Small nick to cloth on upper board. Offset tanning to ffep and rfep. Dedication [from 1893] and second dedication [from 1963] both on ffep. from Otto

Auf dem Lande, Meggendorfer, Lothar
210 Meggendorfer, Lothar Auf dem Lande
München Braun & Schneider 1885 Hardcover Fair Lothar Meggendorfer
Achte auflage. A rare Meggendorfer panorama presented on leporello folds, with 10 panels [possibly the last two panels are missing]. The continuous scene that runs across the panels starts with families arriving on trains to pick berries in a forest. The scene then moves on to the animals in the forest and then the farmers working their fields at the edge of the forest. Then it goes on to show the children working at the farm, gathering kindle wood, and then on to the farm animals and to the river bank where the children are fishing and playing with their toy boats. With a large riverboat in the background [that says Bavaria on its side] there are the fishermen in the deeper waters of the river. The scene progresses to the other side of the river where there is more fishing and basket traps for fish and lots of ducks leading up to the shore where there is another farmyard. There is a verse, in German, running along underneath all 10 panels. The book was printed by Meisenbach, most likely using his newly invented halftone process. On inspection I believe that the main images were printed from screened halftone blocks and the colour added with several line blocks - giving a hand coloured look. One of the cloth backstrips between two panels has been replaced. There is some chipping to the upper board edges along the backstrip. Some of the joins are loose but all are intact and the panorama can be quite safely fully opened to be viewed in its full glory of over 3 metres! As mentioned above, I think that there should be 12 panels. Each panel: 19x31 cm.

Das Puppenhaus reproduction antique pop-up book, Meggendorfer, Lothar
211 Meggendorfer, Lothar Das Puppenhaus reproduction antique pop-up book
Esslingen J. F. Schreiber 1978 Hardcover Fine Lothar Meggendorfer
This reproduction of one of Lothar Meggendorfer's books unfolds to present a 1.4 metre long panoramam presenting a series of rooms and outside scenes from a Victorian era home. Each scene has pop-up and movable elements complete with figures and even pets. This has also been printed in English with the title The Doll's House. Interestingly in Peter Haining's reference on Pop-up books he cites a French title of this book - Maison de Poupée - and does not attribute Meggendorfer. This reproduction is of the second edition of the original, the differences between the first and second being in the first scene where the mule and cart have been replaced by an antique car [presumably a Mercedes....] and in the kitchen scene where the little girl has changed from sitting on the chair stirring a pot with her legs outstretched to a little girl sat with a coffee grinder and her ankles demurely crossed. 21x26 cm. Fine condition with all moving elements and pop-ups complete and working.

Snow Over Bethlehem, Milhous, Katherine
215 Milhous, Katherine Snow Over Bethlehem
New York Charles Scribner's Sons 1945 First edition Hardcover Very Good very good Jacket Katherine Milhous
Interesting children's story, apparently true and which has been based on old diaries and documented tales. The Bethlehem of the title refers to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania - a place where Moravian children were sent at Christmas time, apparently as protection from the Indians. Katherine Milhous was to win the Caldecott Medal a few years later [1951] for The Egg Tree and this book very much set out her style and her folklore approach of that later book. There are three double page colour illustrations at the start of each chapter and black and white illustrations throughout. The end papers are illustrated in white on a dark forest green background. Buff cloth covered boards with a forest green decoration to upper board and titling to backstrip. DJ is not price clipped. There is mild rubbing to the folded edges of the dustjacket and a small chip to the upper spine area. Small 1.5 cm. closed tear to one page edge that has a remaining old sellotape stain to it.

The Old Man Who Lived in a Wood, Mother Goose nursery rhyme
218 Mother Goose nursery rhyme The Old Man Who Lived in a Wood
London George Allen 1902 First edition Hardcover Good + T[homas] Butler-Stoney
Contains 10 full page coloured wood engraving illustrations with black and white wood engravings decorating all of the other pages. The colours are delicate and the artistry is humourous and engaging. Butler-Stoney did not illustrate more than a handful of book titles and that is regrettable as his work is very appealing. This is a reasonably hard to find title. The illustrations are set to the verse that is about a old man who challenges the work that his wife must do around the house believing that he can do in one day what she takes three days to do. A brave man indeed.... so they swap roles and I'm sure you can guess what happens. This rhyme is purported to come from an early 'Mother Goose' anthology and there is no author attributed in this book. Unpaginated, 32 pp. Personal inscription on ffep [1944]. Tan cloth backstrip with paper covered illustrated boards. 21 x 27 cm. Corners / edges worn; backstrip bumped. Front and rear hinges cracked; contents fresh and complete.
