Gulliver's Travels Into Several Remote Nations of the World, Swift, Dean (Jonathan)
21 Swift, Dean (Jonathan) Gulliver's Travels Into Several Remote Nations of the World
New York & Boston H. M. Caldwell Company 1898 Decorative Cloth Very Good Poor Jacket
Contains 10 chromolithographic plates and many intext wood-cuts. This was a new edition that contains explanatory notes by John Frances Waller. The chromolithographs are not attributed, but they are very good quality and in nice clear and bright condtion. The spine of the dust jacket is missing and the remaining parts are quite delicate. It is now all protected in an archival film cover (this can be removed - no fixative is involved). Despite the dust jacket condition, it is extremely rare to see this edition with a dust jacket. The top of the rear board has traces of damp, as does the rear end paper. There is very minor browning internally to a few pages, but basically the condition is very good. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall.

Abroad, Various Authors; Illustrated By: Crane, Thomas and Houghton, Ellen
22 Various Authors; Illustrated By: Crane, Thomas and Houghton, Ellen Abroad
London Marcus Ward & Co 1882 First Edition Hardcover Very Good Thomas Crane and Ellen E. Houghton
This is an original copy of a book that was re-printed in the 1980s. Beautiful chromolithograph illustrations on the cover (see photograph) 11 full page chromos inside. In addition, the majority of the other pages have have quarter or half size chromos and the few remaining have stylised illuminations around the page. The quality and nature of the Thomas Crane illustration are very much of their day, with similar colouring and impression to his contempories such as Walter Crane (his brother) and Kate Greenaway. 56 pages. Size: 22 cm x 19 cm. Subject matter takes in a tour around France and the illustrations provide a very good depiction of Victorian times. This was written as a companion volume to London Town, a copy of which I also have for sale, and At Home. Specific Condition: Binding: Corners worn, edges rubbed, spine worn at top. Small tear to corner of paper on rear board. Front hinge cracked. Interior: Some finger prints and slight browning to some pages, otherwise very good. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall.

Pleasant Surprises for Chicks of All Sizes Nister Moveable, Weatherley, Frederick E. and Bingham, Clifton
23 Weatherley, Frederick E. and Bingham, Clifton Pleasant Surprises for Chicks of All Sizes Nister Moveable
London / New York Ernest Nister / E. P. Dutton & Co. [1891] First edition Hardcover Good Lizzie Lawson, Harriet Mary Bennett, G. H. Thompson, J. Lawson, W. Foster et al.
Contains 8 pages of moveables - dissolving slats - in wonderful chromolithograph. The dissolving slats work like a venetian blind - you pull a tab at the bottom of the page and this causes the displayed illustration to disappear behind a second illustration, thus presenting a new scene. So, across the 8 pages of moveables there are actually 16 illustrations. Published in Germany, c. 1893, by Theo Stroefer as 'Heitere Stunden Ein Wandelbuch Mit Reimen von Eugen Reichenbach'. Although Nister started publishing children's books in 1877, he did not publish any moveables until 1890; this book is most likely the third moveable that was published by Nister. [Hunt] The accompanying stories are presented in 4/5 line stanzas and these text pages are illustrated with line drawings. 325x250 mm / unpaginated, 20pp. Blue and white floral end papers. Condition: Boards badly rubbed and stained with the backstrip frayed with a few little tears. Hinges cracked but still holding. One page has been reattached. Staining to corners of fixed end papers. All mechanisms have been restored and are fully working with replacement tabs. All of the chromolithographs are complete and in good condition. Most of the mounts around the tabs have close tears [repaired], presumably due to over enthusiastic operation in the past. As with most Nister books this has been printed on early wood pulp paper and it is now quite brittle and hence has edge chips in places.

The Book Of Gnomes, Weatherly, Frederic Edward
24 Weatherly, Frederic Edward The Book Of Gnomes
London Ernest Nister 1895 First Edition Hardcover Fair Hardy, Evelyn Stuart
8 chromolithographic plates, 9 other full page sepia wood cut illustrations, and in text sepia illustration on all of the other pages. Oblong format (c. 12 inches x 10 inches; 30 cm. x 25 cm). Undated, approximate date provided by reference to V&A Museum library. The story line follows the preparation for a Ball, which is being held to keep the Elves out of mischief. The story follows the distribution of the invitations, the making of the clothes to be worn, the preparation of the land and the feast, the upset of those that are not invited, a stolen kiss between the Robin and the Wren - altogether a truly charming tale that is beautifully illustrated by the Nister chromolithographs. Illustrated end papers. Specific condition: Binding: Corners worn, outer boards are grubby and scuffed. Ffep missing but frontispiece intact.Personal inscription (1918) on front pastedown end paper. Interior: A few closed tears and grubbiness to page edges; on some of the pages there is quite a strong crease near to the hinge (due, I think to a combination of the heavy paper and the tightness of the binding) and where appropriate these have been reinforced with archival tape to prevent further damage. Not the best of copies, but all of the pages are present and the illustrations are nice and clear - a good opportunity to collect a lovely Nister at a reasonable price. N.B. Now protected in an archival film cover. N.B. The disjointed image is due to the photo being a composite view - the book is larger than my A4 scanner! 4to - over 9" - 12" tall.
