1 Ainslie, Kathleen At Great-Aunt Martha's
London Castell Brothers Ltd. 1905 First edition Hardcover Very Good + good Jacket Kathleen Ainslee
Charmingly illustrated and very rare original edition. Beautifully presented with a full page illustration opposite a page of hand scribed text, with 16 full page chromolithographs in total. The naively drawn figures are full of character and quite humourous. Ainslie's illustrations of these brightly coloured Dutch peg doll characters have taken their influence from Florence Upton's Dutch Doll book, which pre-dated this work by 10 years. 34 pp. 15x23 cm. There is some loss to the rear corners of the dust jacket with chips to the edges. There are some mild streaks to the off white lower board. The illustrative end papers have been coloured in. The interior of the book is really very good - clean, bright and very fresh.

2 Ames, Mrs. Ernest [Mary Frances Ames] Tim and the Dusty Man
London Grant Richards [1903] First edition Hardcover Good Mary Frances Ames
This rare title is a fabulously illustrated children's book that features 24 large format full page chromolithograph illustrations. The illustratiion style is bold, bright and humorous and ever so slightly bizarre at times. The story follows the Dusty Man [who is slightly reminiscent of santa claus] who, with his magical powers, takes a little boy called Tim around the world during the night to visit some very strange places and even stranger characters. Grant Richards published some very nice children's books that often bucked the Nister sugar sweet trend of the Victorian era. 51pp. 24x31 cm. Paper covered illustrated boards with red cloth backstrip. The paper cover to the upper board is chipped around the edges and is lifting in places. Backstrip bumped. Lower board marked. Personal inscription on ffep. Very occasional minor brownspot inside.

Contains 4 double page chromolithograph pop-ups, each with three levels, together with a selection of short fairy stories and poems, all illustrated with sepia line drawings. London Collins and Brown 2003 Hardcover Fine paper engineering by Keith Finch
Contains six reasonably complex pop-ups with moveable elements by Keith Finch. Fully illustrated throughout. I suppose if there is a topic that is suitable for pop-up interpretation it is the Kama Sutra. There is a shortened version of the Kama Sutra text and original, adapted, illustrations are used. Illustrated paper covered boards. 48 pp. 27x27 cm. Please note that, in my opinion, this not suitable for children.

10 Chesson, Nora / illustrated by Louis Wain With Louis Wain to Fairyland
London - Paris - New York Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd. [1904] First edition Hardcover Good Louis Wain
Fabulous large format original Louis Wain fairy book containing 12 full page colour illustrations and black and white line illustrations on all of the other pages. Contains classic fairy tales - Beauty and the Beast, Jack and the Beanstalk, Robinson Crusoe, Robin Hood, Sleeping Beauty and so on. Paper covered illustrated boards [front and rear] over red cloth backstrip. 335x250 mm. 36pp. Corners / edges worn. Scuffing / scratching to boards. Professionally rebound, retaining the original backstrip and end papers and with the gutta percha reset and although holding overall it is delicate and a few of the pages have come loose. This is a problem with the manufacture of this book, mainly due to the poor early wood pulp paper quality which is now tanned and chipped around some of the edges, and just has to be accepted as I feel that too much restoration would detract. The quality and brilliance of the large colour illustrations is quite superb in this hard to find and quite rare Louis Wain edition.

11 Chisholm, Louey (chosen by) The Golden Staircase: Poetry for the Six, Seven and Eight Year Old
London T. C. & E. C. Jack [1910] Hardcover Fair Spooner, M. Dibdin
Contains 4 colour plates and a collection of over 60 poems from a variety of poets, from Walter Scott, to Thackery to Longfellow, all geared to the younger age group. There were four independent books compiled in this series, each targeted at different age groups, and they were also subsequently issued in a single volume, referred to as The Golden Staircase. Spooner's illustrations, which to me are reminiscent of Anne Anderson, make this a very attractively presented book of poetry. Tan paper covered boards with pictorial onlay to upper board and black titling. 23x16 cm. 88 pp. Top and bottom section of backstrip is missing. Corners worn. Personal dedication, from 1913, on ffep.

16 Edgeworth, Maria; Edited By Louey Chisholm / illustrated by Olive Allen Simple Susan Told to the Children Series
London T. C. & E. C. Jack, Ltd. Hardcover Very Good Olive Allen
[1907] Contains 8 full colour plates including frontispiece. The illustrations are nicely commissioned, of children in Regency style clothing and several of them being presented within an Art Nouveau inspired floral frame. Olive Allen is one of those illustrators of children's books that is just as accomplished and appealing as the likes of Tarrant and Attwell, but not as well known. The story presented here posthumously, was originally published in 1846. This story has been often repeated in various children's book series, this one is part of the 'Told to the Children Series' edited by Louey Chisholm and first published by E.C. and T.C. Jack from 1905-10. The series includes over 30 titles from well known authors and illustrators of the day who took 19th century children's classics and retold them in a simple manner for young children. Due to their nice presentation they are now very collectible. 111pages. 15x11 cm. Corners worn; top / tail of backstrip bumped. Nick to edge of upper board. Occasional brown spotting, but mild, otherwise contents clean and tight.

19 Ernest Nister My Own Farmyard Book The Picture Book Maker Series
London Ernest Nister 1908 First edition Hardcover Good + Helen Maguire, William Foster et al
A rare un-cut example of one of Nister's Picture Book Maker Series which contain model cut-outs of the illustrations for the reader to cut out and insert in the correct place within the book. There is a pocket at the front of the book which houses 8 sheets of chromolithograph illustrations [40 in all] and 4 sheets of black and white illustrations [19 in all]. Within the book there are several printed stories with blank numbered spaces for the illustrations. The theme of the stories / illustrations is animals / victorian children, all very typical Nister. Only one of the 59 illustrations has been cut out and this has not yet been mounted in the book, all of the other illustrations are un-cut, complete and intact. This book, or in fact any of the six titles in this series, is extremely rare in this complete and un-cut and un-mounted condition. Corners worn, edges rubbed, top/tail backstrip bumped. Boards a bit marked / grubby. The top edges of the front pocket holding the illustrations is torn. There is no loss of paper but I haven't repaired it as it actually makes it easier to remove the illustration sheets. Front hinge starting. Some grubbiness internally.
