Tim and the Dusty Man, Ames, Mrs. Ernest [Mary Frances Ames]
1 Ames, Mrs. Ernest [Mary Frances Ames] Tim and the Dusty Man
London Grant Richards [1903] First edition Hardcover Good Mary Frances Ames
This rare title is a fabulously illustrated children's book that features 24 large format full page chromolithograph illustrations. The illustratiion style is bold, bright and humorous and ever so slightly bizarre at times. The story follows the Dusty Man [who is slightly reminiscent of santa claus] who, with his magical powers, takes a little boy called Tim around the world during the night to visit some very strange places and even stranger characters. Grant Richards published some very nice children's books that often bucked the Nister sugar sweet trend of the Victorian era. 51pp. 24x31 cm. Paper covered illustrated boards with red cloth backstrip. The paper cover to the upper board is chipped around the edges and is lifting in places. Backstrip bumped. Lower board marked. Personal inscription on ffep. Very occasional minor brownspot inside.

Pretty Polly, A Novel Panorama Picture Book, Bingham, C., Nesbit, E. et al
2 Bingham, C., Nesbit, E. et al Pretty Polly, A Novel Panorama Picture Book
London Ernest Nister 1897 First edition Hardcover Very Good Helen Maguire, E. S. Hardy et al
Contains 4 double page chromolithograph pop-ups, each with three levels, together with a selection of short fairy stories and poems, all illustrated with sepia line drawings. This is the usual superb Nister quality printing from Bavaria, Germany. The pop-ups show [1] cats in and around Polly Parrot's cage, [2] Cinderella's carriage, [3] children and their dogs playing in the water at the sea side, [4] a group of children, watched by their dog and cat, playing Oranges and Lemons. Rather oddly the title page states that there is an Introduction by F. E. Weatherly, however this is incorrect, there is no introduction and the first entry is by L.L. Weedon. Hunt p. 296/331. Montanaro p. 252. [28pp] 245x200mm. Pictorial paper covered boards over red cloth backstrip. Corners worn. Original, intact, end papers. Closed, 2cm tear to page edge. Tan and mild spotting to some page edges. Pop-ups all complete, working and undamaged.

The Puzzle Picture Book [movable], Bingham, Clifton; Transformation / Dissolving Pictures
3 Bingham, Clifton; Transformation / Dissolving Pictures The Puzzle Picture Book [movable]
London / New York Ernest Nister / E. P. Dutton First Edition Hardcover Very Good Hilda K. Robinson
[1900] Contains 6 chromolithograph dissolving scenes [also called slats / transformations]. Each movable consists of four small pictures with text that poses a question relating to the picture and when the tab is pulled at the page bottom another four pictures are revealed showing the answer to the question. I believe that this was also published in German with the title: Ueberraschungen Aller Art. 25x20 cm. 16pp. Blue and white floral pattern end papers. Olive green cloth backstrip. Nister number: 615. Hunt - p.339. Not in Montanaro. Corners, top/bottom of backstrip rubbed. Boards clean and bright with slight marking to lower board. Page edges are a bit fragile, due to type of paper. There is some old, but clean, reinforcement to some of the inner page edges. One hole for tab has been neatly reinforced. All movables work fine and are complete. This is extremely scarce and a very good copy. 48mo - over 3" - 4" tall.

The Pied Piper of Hamelin, Browning, Robert, illustrated by T. Butler-Stoney
5 Browning, Robert, illustrated by T. Butler-Stoney The Pied Piper of Hamelin
London Ernest Nister 1906 First edition thus Hardcover Good + T[homas] Butler-Stoney
Contains 12 full page chromolithograph illustrations - all very vibrant and strong colouring - and black / white wood-cut illustrations on all of the text pages. Possibly based on historical fact dating back to the 14th century [or even earlier], Browning wrote this extended poem of the Hamelin legend in 1842, after the Brothers Grimm had written their folk tale in 1816. There are many illustrated versions of Brownings poem, but this has to be one of the better ones with Butler-Stoney's wonderful characters with such expression. Unfortunately Butler-Stoney did not illustrate that many children's books and that is indeed a shame. Coloured pictorial boards over a red cloth backstrip. 210x270 mm. 26 pp. Nister number 1506. Very slight movement in binding. Altogether a very good copy with all illustrations in vibrant condition.

My Own Farmyard Book The Picture Book Maker Series, Ernest Nister
6 Ernest Nister My Own Farmyard Book The Picture Book Maker Series
London Ernest Nister 1908 First edition Hardcover Good + Helen Maguire, William Foster et al
A rare un-cut example of one of Nister's Picture Book Maker Series which contain model cut-outs of the illustrations for the reader to cut out and insert in the correct place within the book. There is a pocket at the front of the book which houses 8 sheets of chromolithograph illustrations [40 in all] and 4 sheets of black and white illustrations [19 in all]. Within the book there are several printed stories with blank numbered spaces for the illustrations. The theme of the stories / illustrations is animals / victorian children, all very typical Nister. Only one of the 59 illustrations has been cut out and this has not yet been mounted in the book, all of the other illustrations are un-cut, complete and intact. This book, or in fact any of the six titles in this series, is extremely rare in this complete and un-cut and un-mounted condition. Corners worn, edges rubbed, top/tail backstrip bumped. Boards a bit marked / grubby. The top edges of the front pocket holding the illustrations is torn. There is no loss of paper but I haven't repaired it as it actually makes it easier to remove the illustration sheets. Front hinge starting. Some grubbiness internally.

Peep Bo Pictures, Ernest Nister - Movable Slats
7 Ernest Nister - Movable Slats Peep Bo Pictures
London Ernest Nister 1898 First Edition Hardcover Fair G. H. Thompson, E. S. Hardy, W. Foster et al
Delightful and extremely rare movable book from Nister comprising of six transformation chromolithograph illustrations. The transformations are made up of horizontal slats operated by a tab that changes the illustration from one scene into another. So there is one scene of two cats having afternoon tea in a teashop and then they go on a boat trip at sea in a boat driven by a Puffin; a hen with her eggs just hatching and then taking her chickens out on the lake. As expected with Nister they are beautiful and sugar sweet! In Hunt, p.316. Not in Montanaro. 20x17.5 cm; 16pp.Scuffed boards with worn corners. This book suffers from the common problem with Nister books of having been published on wood pulp paper which is now very brittle, particularly around the edges. The book binder has re-set the pages and replaced the end papers [retaining the original front and rear free end papers] and reinforced some of the edges with archival tape, but the book is still fragile with chips / abrasions around the page edges / hinge lines - hence overall 'fair' condition. Some of the tabs have been replaced / repaired and all transformations work [to be operated with care!]. A very rare book with lovely illustrations! 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall.

London Ernest Nister 1905 First Edition Hardcover Very Good Arthur A. Dixon
There are six full page Nister chromolithographic plates and 70 other half tone illustrations. Chromolithographs printed in Bavaria. The linen backed hard cover has bevelled edges, the page edges are all gilt and the front and rear endpapers are nicely illustrated. This is one of the E.N. Pleasant Surprises for Chicks of All Sizes Nister Moveable, Weatherley, Frederick E. and Bingham, Clifton
17 Weatherley, Frederick E. and Bingham, Clifton Pleasant Surprises for Chicks of All Sizes Nister Moveable
London / New York Ernest Nister / E. P. Dutton & Co. [1891] First edition Hardcover Good Lizzie Lawson, Harriet Mary Bennett, G. H. Thompson, J. Lawson, W. Foster et al.
Contains 8 pages of moveables - dissolving slats - in wonderful chromolithograph. The dissolving slats work like a venetian blind - you pull a tab at the bottom of the page and this causes the displayed illustration to disappear behind a second illustration, thus presenting a new scene. So, across the 8 pages of moveables there are actually 16 illustrations. Published in Germany, c. 1893, by Theo Stroefer as 'Heitere Stunden Ein Wandelbuch Mit Reimen von Eugen Reichenbach'. Although Nister started publishing children's books in 1877, he did not publish any moveables until 1890; this book is most likely the third moveable that was published by Nister. [Hunt] The accompanying stories are presented in 4/5 line stanzas and these text pages are illustrated with line drawings. 325x250 mm / unpaginated, 20pp. Blue and white floral end papers. Condition: Boards badly rubbed and stained with the backstrip frayed with a few little tears. Hinges cracked but still holding. One page has been reattached. Staining to corners of fixed end papers. All mechanisms have been restored and are fully working with replacement tabs. All of the chromolithographs are complete and in good condition. Most of the mounts around the tabs have close tears [repaired], presumably due to over enthusiastic operation in the past. As with most Nister books this has been printed on early wood pulp paper and it is now quite brittle and hence has edge chips in places.
