The Prize 1907
1 The Prize 1907
London Wells Gardner, Darton & Co. 1907 First Edition Hardcover Very Good
Contains 13 full page chromolithographs plates (including frontispiece) and many other full and part page relief wood engravings. The Prize was published as a monthly journal for children and could also be bought with the 12 issues bound into a single volume, which is what is being offered here. With each month was a chromolithographic plate and the January issue also contained an extra 'free' chromo plate, hence the 13. It is the richness of these chromolithographs that makes the Prize very popular with collectors. The colour plates in this volume include Little Red Riding Hood, a Marmoset monkey, children dressed in winter clothes with their muffs and so on. It provides a wonderful 'snap shots' of typical Victorian / Edwardian life, showing the clothes and activities and numerous animals. An extremely interesting and well presented window on a different era and world. The rear cover has advertising for Pear's soap and Mennen's toilet powder. At Great-Aunt Martha's, Ainslie, Kathleen
5 Ainslie, Kathleen At Great-Aunt Martha's
London Castell Brothers Ltd. 1905 First edition Hardcover Very Good + good Jacket Kathleen Ainslee
Charmingly illustrated and very rare original edition. Beautifully presented with a full page illustration opposite a page of hand scribed text, with 16 full page chromolithographs in total. The naively drawn figures are full of character and quite humourous. Ainslie's illustrations of these brightly coloured Dutch peg doll characters have taken their influence from Florence Upton's Dutch Doll book, which pre-dated this work by 10 years. 34 pp. 15x23 cm. There is some loss to the rear corners of the dust jacket with chips to the edges. There are some mild streaks to the off white lower board. The illustrative end papers have been coloured in. The interior of the book is really very good - clean, bright and very fresh.

The Pied Piper of Hamelin, Browning, Robert, illustrated by T. Butler-Stoney
7 Browning, Robert, illustrated by T. Butler-Stoney The Pied Piper of Hamelin
London Ernest Nister 1906 First edition thus Hardcover Good + T[homas] Butler-Stoney
Contains 12 full page chromolithograph illustrations - all very vibrant and strong colouring - and black / white wood-cut illustrations on all of the text pages. Possibly based on historical fact dating back to the 14th century [or even earlier], Browning wrote this extended poem of the Hamelin legend in 1842, after the Brothers Grimm had written their folk tale in 1816. There are many illustrated versions of Brownings poem, but this has to be one of the better ones with Butler-Stoney's wonderful characters with such expression. Unfortunately Butler-Stoney did not illustrate that many children's books and that is indeed a shame. Coloured pictorial boards over a red cloth backstrip. 210x270 mm. 26 pp. Nister number 1506. Very slight movement in binding. Altogether a very good copy with all illustrations in vibrant condition.

Swiss Family Robinson - in words of one syllable, I. F. M. [possibly Mary Godolphin] - adapted by
13 I. F. M. [possibly Mary Godolphin] - adapted by Swiss Family Robinson - in words of one syllable
New York McLoughlin Bros. [1889] Hardcover Good Chromolithographs unattributed
Contains 6 chromolithograph plates [artist unattributed], this is an abridged / rewritten version of Johann David Wyss's classic that has been reconstructed for younger readers only using words with one syllable. Several books of this type were published, i.e. rewritten in one syllable. When this title was published by Routledge in London, Mary Godolphin was cited as the author which makes me think that the author credited here, I.F.S., is Ms. Godolphin. Its an interesting series of books and this is nicely presented with the chromolithographs, if a little age weary. Tan cloth boards with gilt titling and black / red/ blue / white illustration to front. 245x200 mm. 112 pp. Condition: Corners worn; top / tail of backstrip bumped and worn through in a couple of places. Generally grubby / stained boards. Front and rear hinges cracked. The interior is clean and complete, although the paper is age browned with very minor spotting to about three pages.
